Film Review: 'Detroit'

There are a few films in life that torment you while you are watching them, but in the end you are glad you have seen them.  The preceding statement does not refer to the scare of a horror film, but rather reenactments via film of horrific events that have occurred throughout history.  As someone who has studied history, and a cinephile I have come to greatly appreciate these types of historical biopics and epics.  Films that make you reflect on the United States or the World's social, political, and military history.

Since 2010 no filmmaker has been able to match Kathryn Bigelow's relentless social commentaries that have come in the form of historical reflection: The 2003 Iraq War (Hurt Locker) and the hunt for Osama Bin Laden (Zero Dark Thirty).  For her latest film the Academy Award winning director went back a bit further to 1967 Detroit known to many as Mo-town, to revisit the 12th street riots, but more particularly the tragedy at the Algiers Motel that took place within the riots.  The film while historical is a powerful social commentary and narrative on the history of police brutality within the United Sates inner cities.

The restoration of the summer blockbuster - A 'Baby Driver' Review

Original films are rare instances in Hollywood these days, original summer blockbuster are an even rarer occasion.  Unless you are a known quantity by a major studio who has produced billions for that studio as a qualifier like Christopher Nolan with Warner Bros., your chances of getting an original idea to the big screen are not good.

Which brings us to Edgar Wright and Baby Driver.  Is Wright a known quantity in Hollywood? Yes, but more for his unique visual style and comedic sensibilities than his blockbuster prowess, bringing us the Cornetto Trilogy and a visually stunning adaptation of Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World.  He was famously ousted from Marvel Studio's Ant-Man, after he wanted to work outside the constraints of the MCU formula to bring audiences a great heist film rather than an average superhero film.

So what happens when a major studio takes a risk on a very particular filmmaker for a major summer release? Find out in our Baby Driver review after the break...

Check It Out: New Thor: Ragnarok trailer released!

There have been a lot of great super hero movies this year. We've gotten Wonder Woman, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. But there's still a couple big ones left for 2017 and Thor: Ragnarok look like it will continue the trend of 2017 being a great year for the genre. Marvel just released a new trailer which you can watch below.

Check It Out: Stranger Things Season 2 trailer released!

Netflix has released a full trailer for Season 2 of Stranger Things. The gang is back together but things are not what they used to be. Can the second season recapture the magic of the first? Get a glimpse for yourself.

A Seminal Spectacle! - A 'Dunkirk' Review

There is probably nothing more within the entertainment landscape I enjoy more than a Christopher Nolan film.  The filmmaker, claimed by me to be the best of his generation, has yet to make a bad movie either critically or commercially.  As a fan of history, and self proclaimed Nolan follower, it was a no-brainer to put Dunkirk at the top of my most anticipated films of summer 2017.  So could a film about a little known WWII battle live up to legacy of Nolan, and earn it's spot at the top of my list?  Find out in our Dunkirk review after the break...

Hail Caesar! - A 'War for the Planet of the Apes' Review

It is a rare instance in Hollywood when a remake of a film or franchise surpasses the original, but that is exactly what happened Rupert Wyatt's Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) and Matt Reeve's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014). Perhaps an even rarer occurrence in blockbuster filmmaking is when the end of a trilogy meets the expectations of two epic predecessors, from Return of the Jedi to Back to the Future Part III many iconic franchises and filmmakers have failed to complete a perfect story.  Could Director Matt Reeve defy the typical Trilogy curse with War of the Planet of the Apes or better yet distinguish itself above its two previous near perfect predecessors? Find out in our War for the Planet of the Apes review after the break...

One Web Short of Perfection - 'Spider-Man' Homecoming Review

It has been over a decade since audiences have been given a quality Spider-Man film with Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 in 2004.  After years of symbiotic let downs, and six sided false promises, arguably the most popular character in modern fiction was given a new hope when Sony reached a deal with Disney to bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In 2016, the impossible happened when Disney revealed their new Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland, finding what seemed like the first true balance between both Peter Parker and Spider-Man. However as much of the Superhuman Civil War that Holland was able to steal via his slick web swinging and sheer joy.  It was not quite a big enough sample size to reveal wether or not this new web-head was too good to be true; an answer that would have to be settled in Spider-Man's first true Marvel film: Jon Watt's Spider-Man Homecoming.

Find our Spider-Man Homecoming review with mild spoilers after the break...

Confirmed Epic Podcast #67: Spider-Man Homecoming

In the 67th edition of the confirmed epic podcast The Reel Brad Bell , AKA Andrew Stokes, and Jerry "Barbecue17" Reed review: the latest entry into the MCU: Jon Watts's Spider-Man Homecoming.  Does the film reach Spider-Man 2 levels or is it a tad overrated? Controlled Bayhem! - 'Transformers: The Last Knight' Review

One of the biggest dichotomies in the film industry has been Michael Bay's Transformers Franchise; your average movie watcher seems to love every entry into the series shelling out billions of dollars worldwide, while film critics have universally panned everything post the original Transformers film in 2007.  Here at The Epic Review AKA Andrew Stokes and I have always been huge fans of the first film, and have been waiting for this franchise to return to its original glory for nearly a decade.  Make no mistake this is our favorite series to hate watch, but could Transformers: The Last Knight restore the franchise critically a decade after Michael Bay wowed audiences across the globe on the 4th of July weekend 2007?

Find out in our Transformers: The Last Knight review after the break...

Check It Out: Transformers 5 Wins the Weekend Box-Office with Franchise Low

Despite how poorly critics received Transformers: The Last knight, most Hollywood Insiders still predicted the film to dominate at the box-office in its opening weekend.  When you look at the numbers initially you see that The Last Knight opened to $69.1 Million, confirming the fact that most filmgoers have no taste for good cinema, however when you dive deep into the numbers you realize this actually was not the case.

See if these box-office numbers are more than meets the eye after the break...

1970's Icons of Cinema Winner: Darth Vader

After hours of debate, and 2 weeks of voting, Darth Vader has been declared the most Iconic Film Character of the 1970's based on David Prowse and James Earl Jones portrayal. Darth Vader took home 76% of the vote compared the Shark from Jaws who garnered 24%.

We heard many complaints and considered there validly, that Vader transcended A New Hope, and the decade of the 70's too much to put him on the list.  However according to our rules for this contest, he is eligible based on the fact that his introduction was in Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977, and 77 is the characters only onscreen appearance in the 1970's.

Thanks to all listeners of The Confirmed Epic Podcast proudly presented by Geeks World Wide Radio Network who voted, you can see the final results below.  Stay tuned for the 1980's Icons of Cinema Showdown, which will start on The Confirmed Epic Podcast the second half of July 2017.

Thanks again to everyone that voted and thegww.com for sponsoring this contest!

Check It Out: Hot Toys Spider-Man Homecoming Iron Man

Hot toys has revealed yet another Iron Man, but this time for good cause.  Today the upscale toy boutique gave us our first look at their 1/6 scale figure based on the Mark VLVII Iron Man armor featured in this summer's Spider-Man Homecoming.  By this point the Hot Toys team could sculpt Robert Downey Jr.'s face in their sleep they have done it so many times, but this is arguably the best Downey sculpt they have done to date.  Aside from the silver in the Mark VLVII it is the little things that will have Iron Man collectors clamoring for this piece, such as the sunglasses or Iron Drone.

Check It Out: Sony Planning Kraven And Mysterio Spinoff Films

After confirming Carnage as the main villain in Venom, Sony continues to make waves in Hollywood. The studio is reportedly planning to make spinoff films revolving around classic Spider-Man villains: Mysterio and Kraven The Hunter.  The wording of the rumors do not specify if this is a spinoff film that would team the two villains up or if they would be separate films, but I would assume the latter.

As much as I would like to see these two villains in a Spider-Man Homecoming Sequel, I wish Sony would get another solo Spider-Man film right before they announce anymore spinoff films.

Let us know if you are excited to finally see Kraven and Mysterio on the big screen in the comments below or tweet me @thereelbradbell

Check It Out: Venom's Villain will be Carnage

Tom Hardy has his first nemesis in Sony Spider-Man universe, and it isn't Tom Holland.  Instead come October 5th 2018, Venom will be going up against his symbiote brethren: Carnage.  This seems like a good decision based on the fact that comics fans have been clamoring to see Carnage on the big scree since the Sam Raimi era of Spider-Man, there is also still some confusion on what part Tom Holland's take on Spider-Man will be in these recently announced Spidey spinoff films.

Check It Out: Han Solo Film loses Lord and Miller (Updated!)

The first major shakeup since Disney bought Star Wars occurred yesterday, well at least since they forgot Josh Trank actually existed, and that was Han Solo losing its beloved Directors: Phil Lord and Chris Miller.  The dynamic directing duo claimed they left the film over different visions of what it should be compared to what Disney wanted.

Updated: It is now rumored that Ron Howard is the favorite to takeover as the new Han Solo Director!

Check It Out: Damon Lindelof and HBO are Developing a Watchmen Series

One of the men behind Lost and The Left Overs is turning his attention to the deconstruction of the superhero genre.  Rumor is that Damon Lindelof is working on a Watchmen television series for HBO. The move makes sense considering Lindelof's history of heady projects, and that The Watchmen story is perfect for HBO mini-series, in which nothing has to be held back for content of times sake.

The man who most consider to be the best actor in Hollywood is retiring.  Daniel-Day Lewis who has won a slew of Oscars for films such as: My Two Left Feet, There Will Be Blood, and Lincoln, as well been nominated for just about every role he has ever portrayed is calling it quits at the age of 60. Lewis is best known for being the greatest method actor of all time due to his commitment to live as his characters before, and during filming.  For example to prepare for Last of the Mohicans, Lewis lived in the mountains alone for nearly a year with no communication with the outside World to prepare for his role as Nathaniel Poe.

Check It Out: Marvel Legacy #1: To Debut Avengers 1 Million BC

Once again Marvel is promising to change everything this September with Marvel Legacy, however this time that is supposedly going to be accomplished by a one shot rather than a 10 part summer event that would cost you over $50 to collect.  Rather than changing every thing the tag lines for Marvel Legacy are: "Its All Connected" and "Make Mine Marvel", the first being a motto for the MCU, and the second being classic saying from the Stan and Jack days of Marvel Comics.

Icons of Cinema Showdown 1970's Final: Jaws Vs. Vader

Icons of Cinema Showdown 1970's Round #2 Winner: Darth Vader

In a not so surprising runaway victory The Dark Lord of the Sith: Darth Vader dominated the 1970's Icons of Cinema Showdown round #2 for the 1970's.  Vader took in an impressive 72% of the vote besting The Italian Stallion Rocky Balboa who came in second at 15%, Christopher Reeves Superman at 3rd with 13%, and the disappointing Linda Blair's Regan from The Exorcist who could not manage to conjure up a single vote.  Vader now moves on to the 1970's final round where he is the favorite to beat Bruce The Shark from Steven Spielbergs's 1975 classic Jaws.

Special thanks to everyone that voted and thegww.com for sponsoring this contest!

Check It Out: Hot Toys Reveals Spider-man Homecoming Spider-Man 1/6 Scale Figure (Updated!)

Hot Toys has revealed their highly detailed figure for the upcoming Spider-Man Homecoming.  There will be two editions with the deluxe version adding the science jacket seen in the film's teaser poster. The figure most likely will not ship until the end of 2018, and if I had to guess the regular version will most likely retail for $235 with the deluxe edition costing around $260.  If you want this one I suggest pre-ordering it today at Side Show or Big Bad Toy Store, based on the fact that all the other Spider-Man hot toys have become extremely rare and pricey on the after market.

As far as my thoughts on the figure, it is hard to give a clear impression of it due to the fact that hot toys does not have the licensing rights at the moment to reveal the Tom Holland face sculpt.  I do however adore the fact that the detail to attention that hot toys has put on the Spider-Man's wed pits!

*Updated with Tom Holland Head Sculpt!
