Controlled Bayhem! - 'Transformers: The Last Knight' Review

One of the biggest dichotomies in the film industry has been Michael Bay's Transformers Franchise; your average movie watcher seems to love every entry into the series shelling out billions of dollars worldwide, while film critics have universally panned everything post the original Transformers film in 2007.  Here at The Epic Review AKA Andrew Stokes and I have always been huge fans of the first film, and have been waiting for this franchise to return to its original glory for nearly a decade.  Make no mistake this is our favorite series to hate watch, but could Transformers: The Last Knight restore the franchise critically a decade after Michael Bay wowed audiences across the globe on the 4th of July weekend 2007?

Find out in our Transformers: The Last Knight review after the break...

Check It Out: Transformers 5 Wins the Weekend Box-Office with Franchise Low

Despite how poorly critics received Transformers: The Last knight, most Hollywood Insiders still predicted the film to dominate at the box-office in its opening weekend.  When you look at the numbers initially you see that The Last Knight opened to $69.1 Million, confirming the fact that most filmgoers have no taste for good cinema, however when you dive deep into the numbers you realize this actually was not the case.

See if these box-office numbers are more than meets the eye after the break...

1970's Icons of Cinema Winner: Darth Vader

After hours of debate, and 2 weeks of voting, Darth Vader has been declared the most Iconic Film Character of the 1970's based on David Prowse and James Earl Jones portrayal. Darth Vader took home 76% of the vote compared the Shark from Jaws who garnered 24%.

We heard many complaints and considered there validly, that Vader transcended A New Hope, and the decade of the 70's too much to put him on the list.  However according to our rules for this contest, he is eligible based on the fact that his introduction was in Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977, and 77 is the characters only onscreen appearance in the 1970's.

Thanks to all listeners of The Confirmed Epic Podcast proudly presented by Geeks World Wide Radio Network who voted, you can see the final results below.  Stay tuned for the 1980's Icons of Cinema Showdown, which will start on The Confirmed Epic Podcast the second half of July 2017.

Check It Out: Hot Toys Spider-Man Homecoming Iron Man

Hot toys has revealed yet another Iron Man, but this time for good cause.  Today the upscale toy boutique gave us our first look at their 1/6 scale figure based on the Mark VLVII Iron Man armor featured in this summer's Spider-Man Homecoming.  By this point the Hot Toys team could sculpt Robert Downey Jr.'s face in their sleep they have done it so many times, but this is arguably the best Downey sculpt they have done to date.  Aside from the silver in the Mark VLVII it is the little things that will have Iron Man collectors clamoring for this piece, such as the sunglasses or Iron Drone.

Check It Out: Sony Planning Kraven And Mysterio Spinoff Films

After confirming Carnage as the main villain in Venom, Sony continues to make waves in Hollywood. The studio is reportedly planning to make spinoff films revolving around classic Spider-Man villains: Mysterio and Kraven The Hunter.  The wording of the rumors do not specify if this is a spinoff film that would team the two villains up or if they would be separate films, but I would assume the latter.

As much as I would like to see these two villains in a Spider-Man Homecoming Sequel, I wish Sony would get another solo Spider-Man film right before they announce anymore spinoff films.

Let us know if you are excited to finally see Kraven and Mysterio on the big screen in the comments below or tweet me @thereelbradbell

Check It Out: Venom's Villain will be Carnage

Tom Hardy has his first nemesis in Sony Spider-Man universe, and it isn't Tom Holland.  Instead come October 5th 2018, Venom will be going up against his symbiote brethren: Carnage.  This seems like a good decision based on the fact that comics fans have been clamoring to see Carnage on the big scree since the Sam Raimi era of Spider-Man, there is also still some confusion on what part Tom Holland's take on Spider-Man will be in these recently announced Spidey spinoff films.

Check It Out: Han Solo Film loses Lord and Miller (Updated!)

The first major shakeup since Disney bought Star Wars occurred yesterday, well at least since they forgot Josh Trank actually existed, and that was Han Solo losing its beloved Directors: Phil Lord and Chris Miller.  The dynamic directing duo claimed they left the film over different visions of what it should be compared to what Disney wanted.

Updated: It is now rumored that Ron Howard is the favorite to takeover as the new Han Solo Director!

Find out our thoughts on the departure after the break...

Check It Out: Damon Lindelof and HBO are Developing a Watchmen Series

One of the men behind Lost and The Left Overs is turning his attention to the deconstruction of the superhero genre.  Rumor is that Damon Lindelof is working on a Watchmen television series for HBO. The move makes sense considering Lindelof's history of heady projects, and that The Watchmen story is perfect for HBO mini-series, in which nothing has to be held back for content of times sake.

Daniel Day-Lewis Retires

The man who most consider to be the best actor in Hollywood is retiring.  Daniel-Day Lewis who has won a slew of Oscars for films such as: My Two Left Feet, There Will Be Blood, and Lincoln, as well been nominated for just about every role he has ever portrayed is calling it quits at the age of 60. Lewis is best known for being the greatest method actor of all time due to his commitment to live as his characters before, and during filming.  For example to prepare for Last of the Mohicans, Lewis lived in the mountains alone for nearly a year with no communication with the outside World to prepare for his role as Nathaniel Poe.

Check It Out: Marvel Legacy #1: To Debut Avengers 1 Million BC

Once again Marvel is promising to change everything this September with Marvel Legacy, however this time that is supposedly going to be accomplished by a one shot rather than a 10 part summer event that would cost you over $50 to collect.  Rather than changing every thing the tag lines for Marvel Legacy are: "Its All Connected" and "Make Mine Marvel", the first being a motto for the MCU, and the second being classic saying from the Stan and Jack days of Marvel Comics.

Icons of Cinema Showdown 1970's Round #2 Winner: Darth Vader

In a not so surprising runaway victory The Dark Lord of the Sith: Darth Vader dominated the 1970's Icons of Cinema Showdown round #2 for the 1970's.  Vader took in an impressive 72% of the vote besting The Italian Stallion Rocky Balboa who came in second at 15%, Christopher Reeves Superman at 3rd with 13%, and the disappointing Linda Blair's Regan from The Exorcist who could not manage to conjure up a single vote.  Vader now moves on to the 1970's final round where he is the favorite to beat Bruce The Shark from Steven Spielbergs's 1975 classic Jaws.

Check It Out: Hot Toys Reveals Spider-man Homecoming Spider-Man 1/6 Scale Figure (Updated!)

Hot Toys has revealed their highly detailed figure for the upcoming Spider-Man Homecoming.  There will be two editions with the deluxe version adding the science jacket seen in the film's teaser poster. The figure most likely will not ship until the end of 2018, and if I had to guess the regular version will most likely retail for $235 with the deluxe edition costing around $260.  If you want this one I suggest pre-ordering it today at Side Show or Big Bad Toy Store, based on the fact that all the other Spider-Man hot toys have become extremely rare and pricey on the after market.

As far as my thoughts on the figure, it is hard to give a clear impression of it due to the fact that hot toys does not have the licensing rights at the moment to reveal the Tom Holland face sculpt.  I do however adore the fact that the detail to attention that hot toys has put on the Spider-Man's wed pits!

*Updated with Tom Holland Head Sculpt!

Check It Out: Hot Toys Arkham Knight

Nearly two years after the release of the Arkham Knight game Hot Toys gas revealed their Arkham Knight 1/6 Scale Collectible Figure.  Known mainly for his knack of stopping the Batmobile in traffic, and his not so secret identity; The Arkham Knight provided Batman fans with one the best modern character designs in the history of DC Comics.  The fresh new look of the Arkham Knight, and popularity of the game pretty much guaranteed a Hot Toys version of the character.

R.I.P: Adam West

Shocking and sad news this summer day as the legendary actor: Adam West who became a cultural icon due his epic portrayal as Batman on the 1960's television show alongside Burt Ward's Robin has passed away following a short and private battle with leukemia.  Regardless of who you consider your Batman to be it was West who set the precedent for playing the caped crusader, and for millions across the globe he will always be Batman.

This is personally sad for me due to the fact that like many the Adam West Batman was my first experience with what would go on to become my favorite fictional character of all time.  Aside for that developed love of Batman through West, my experience with his Batman was siting on my grandfathers lap as we watched the show in syndication together.  My grandfather and I shared a lifelong love for Batman amongst other things that would continue from West through Bale up until the time of my Grandfathers death in 2015.  I can still hear my grandfathers laugh, and smell the pungent smoke from his pipe as we sat together hours on end as the famous animated opening title sequence and iconic theme song continued to play throughout those childhood days.  My only hope now is that somewhere out there my grandfather along with millions of other good souls can share those types of memories with Batman.

Adam West was 88 years old.

A Hollow Tomb - 'The Mummy' Review

As the sands of time pass so do the tropes and staples of Hollywood.  One thought to be long dead were the universal monsters, forgotten after the slasher craze of the late 70's and early 80's these films thrived on the innocence of fear in its purest form.  Introducing the World to some of the most iconic creatures and characters in the history of fiction.  The 2017 version of The Mummy helmed by infamous writer, but first time director: Alex Kurtzman faced the tremendous challenge of modernizing, and reintroducing these characters for a new generation and establishing Universal's Dark Universe.

Were Tom Cruise and Kurtzman able to re-establish some of the greatest icons in the history of fiction?  Find out after the break...

Check It Out: 'Black Panther' Teaser Trailer

Marvel has finally release the first trailer in teaser form for their upcoming Black Panther film, which you can enjoy above!

I must say that I pretty wowed by this teaser trailer, I knew we would get something different from director Ryan Coogler (Creed, Fruitvale Station), but what we see here looks Guardians of the Galaxy level different.  Perhaps I was expecting a tale of chivalry as the kingdom of Wakanda was established in the MCU, but the trailer looks more like a mash up of Predator, Total Recall, and the 5th Element set in the MCU.  We will have much more to say about this trailer on the next edition of the Confirmed Epic Podcast.

Check It Out: Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon revealed!

When Nintendo announced a Pokémon-centric Nintendo Direct for today the speculation ran wild. Could this be the reveal of the Game Freak Switch title? Would we see the oft-rumored Pokémon Stars? Maybe we'd get 3DS remakes for Diamond and Pearl? Well the reveal has come. There is a Pokémon Switch game as well as two new mainline Pokémon releases for the 3DS, but they may not be what fans were hoping for.

Check It Out: NECA to Release TMNT Alien at SDCC 2017

In the second season of the original 1987 TMNT cartoon, an episode entitled: The Case of the Killer Pizzas sought to answer the question of how the green machine would combat a Xenomorph.  Most people have fondly remembered this border line copyright infringement, but the episode always seems to get a good chuckle amongst TMNT and Alien fans.

However the summer at SDCC 2017 NECA is giving the episode it's first source of legitimacy, by releasing the yellow Alien figure and answering the geek debate of does the episode fall with in Alien cannon? OK maybe this figure does not answer that, but the figure is still pretty EPIC! This announcement comes on the heels of NECA announcing that they would also be releasing 6 inch TMNT action figures for the first time at SDCC 2017.

Check It Out: Neil Blomkamp's Next Film Will Take Place in the District 9 Universe

Recently we reported Neil Blomkamp's New Oats Studios for upcoming Sci-Fi directors, leaving us to wonder with the revolutionary director shepherding so many new talents, when would he have time for his own projects? After his Alien 5 was pushed and gutted by Ridley Scott in favor of Alien Covenant, the question became even more concerning.  Fans of Blomkamp, and his unique socio-political science fiction mind, can stop worrying, and begin anticipating his next project, which will be a film directed by him set in the same universe as critically acclaimed modern sci-fi masterpiece: District 9.

Based on the events of the first film this will most likely be a story revolving around what happened to this World after we left it, more than an a direct character continuation.  There is currently no release date set for Blomkamp's District 9 follow up, but as someone who considered the original film one of the best of the decade, I could not be happier.

Love Conquers Hate! - 'Wonder Woman' Review

The past few years have been particularly terrible for two groups: Women and DC fans who actually want to see a good superhero film post Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy.  Obviously within the greater context of society, the latter pales in comparison to the film complaints.  However the two are not inseparable either, if there was ever a time that our Country, even our World needed a strong female to look up to, that moment is now.  We have a leader who refers to women as slobs, pigs, dogs, and sees an entire gender not merely more than sexual objects (Click the preceding link to the USA Today article if you don't believe me!).  The political statement opportunity of female empowerment that Patty Jenkin's Wonder Woman has the power to represent at a blockbuster, directorial, and character level is unprecedented.

So did Wonder Woman live up to the challenge of modern history and  transcend the superhero film genre or was it simply just another superhero origin film? Find out after the break...

Mild spoilers for Wonder Woman follow!

Check Out: Wonder Woman Post A $103.5 Mil. Opening

In a record breaking opening weekend for a female directed film Patty Jenkin's Wonder Woman opened to $100.5 Million domestically.  The film also took in an additional $122.5 Million internationally, with $38 Million of that coming from China.  This puts the films total haul at $223 Million over just three and a half days.  When compared to other critically acclaimed superhero origin film competition Diana Prince dominated, besting: Batman Begins $48 Million, Iron Man $98 Million, but failed to beat Spider-Man's 2002 opening weekend that took in $114.8 Million.

*Updated: Wonder Woman's weekend actuals were $103.5 Million.

This news, her beloved debut in BVS, along with critical acclaim almost guarantees a Wonder Woman trilogy from WB, and possibly her being put to the forefront of future Justice League films.
