Action Figure Review: The Penguin (Batman Returns) from DC Multiverse by Mattel

I still have very fond, vivid memories of going to see Batman Returns with my dad when it came out in 1992. I remember a number of details about the experience, including going to KB toys before the film and getting a Toy Biz DC Comics Superheroes Robin, but mostly I remember just how strange and dangerous the film felt to me while at the same time how captivated I was by it. As an eight year old, I'm not sure I'd ever encountered a film scene that left me as excited as Batman Returns' climactic showdown in the sewers. I'd also never seen a film that had villains as menacing as Catwoman and the Penguin. While Catwoman was definitely a femme fatale and a cool character, I'm not sure eight year old me was yet able to comprehend all of Catwoman's appeal or why she "felt so much yummier" but I totally realized just how weird and twisted the Penguin was. I mean, Joker was an insane villain who wanted to kill Gotham, but Penguin wanted to kill babies and drown people in toxic waste. That kind of stuff stands out to an eight year old, y'know? Of course, I'm not really here to discuss Batman Returns; I'm here to talk about the Danny DeVito based Penguin figure from Mattel's fairly new DC Multiverse line that covers a few different DC films and video games. Ready for a look at a version of the Penguin who eats raw fish, bit a guy's nose, and actually had flippers? Then join me after the break...

Action Figure Review: Raph in Disguise from Ninja Turtles by Playmates

As soon as I heard about this action figure, I knew I had to have it. Not only is Raphael my favorite turtle but this figure totally reminds me of the original movie scenes where Raphael travels above ground in New York disguised in a trench coat and a hat. Further, the action figure Don, the Undercover Turtle has always been one of my favorite figures from the vintage toyline so I was thrilled to have a new toy that somewhat paid homage to the original. If Playmates ever releases a disguised Raphael in their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Classics line, I'll freak out. I just know it. As I mentioned in my review of The Shredder, I'm currently cautiously optimistic about the new film that is slated for release on August 8th, 2014. I'm really getting into an even more hardcore TMNT groove than usual so even if the movie ends up being less than awesome, I'm still enjoying eating TMNT pizza from Pizza Hut, drinking TMNT crush, listening to Ninja Rap, watching the cartoon, and reading the IDW comics. Ready for a review of Raph in Disguise to help add to this radical summer? Then join me after the break...

Check it Out: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Pizzas from Pizza Hut!

For over a month now the good folks over at the Technodrome Forums have been discussing Pizza Hut's involvement with the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film (many of us remember the awesome TMNT promos from back in the 90's at places like Pizza Hut and Burger King) and we've finally got some official promo images from Pizza Hut about their new TMNT themed pizzas. I was so tempted by these that I actually went and hit up my nearest Pizza Hut to grab one for lunch. More details about all of the available pizzas after the break...

Action Figure Review: Khal Drogo from Game of Thrones by Dark Horse Deluxe

Until I started working on this review, I had no idea that Jason Momoa of Conan the Barbarian, Stargate: Atlantis, and Bullet to the Head played Khal Drogo in the HBO television series Game of Thrones. The beard and make-up really threw me off! Anyways, if you want my opinion as to which figure in Dark Horse Deluxe's Game of Thrones line is the best, then Khal Drogo is the answer. Just looking at this guy definitely shows how a statuesque figure can sometimes appear more dynamic than even the most well articulated action figure. I'm a guy who likes with my toys so I'm not wanting all of my toys to sacrifice articulation for sculpt, but every now and then I'm completely good with a miniature statue. And my word, Drogo here is an excellent and fearsome miniature statue. Drogo is the khal, or leader, of a large tribe of the Dothraki. As the khal, Drogo leads his khalasar in battle, setting an example for them in courage and ferocity; that's perfectly displayed by this figure's excellent pose. Ready for a closer look at Khal Drogo, Daenerys Targaryen's "sun and stars?" Then join me after the break....

Must Watch: Vanilla Ice Ninja Rap Go Ninja, Go Ninja GO! - I hope this gets you pumped today, no matter what you're doing!

Action Figure Review: The Shredder from Ninja Turtles by Playmates

At this point I am cautiously optimistic about the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film that is set to be released on August 8th, 2014. I really, really want it to be awesome but, like many turtles fans, I do have my reservations. This hasn't stopped me from getting excited about some of the cool new Turtles like the various flavors of Crush soda (we drank some on the most recent episode of the Confirmed Epic Podcast), the TMNT Gushers, and of course the new toys from Playmates. I'm rather charmed by the toyish simplicity of the TMNT toys based on the Nickelodeon Cartoon but I decided I definitely wanted some of the movie figures, too, so I selected a few that I thought might integrate into the Nick line: The Foot Soldier, Raph in Disguise, and The Shredder, who I'm reviewing today. As I mentioned the last time I reviewed an action figure of The Shredder, I'm not sure the character has ever had a truly definitive action figure and after reviewing this new move version, I still feel the same way (let's hope Playmates reveals a Shredder as part of their TMNT Classics line). We don't know much about Shredder's portrayal in the film; there are definitely some images in the trailer that make him look robotic at times. I guess all that will be revealed in a little less than a month, huh? For now, let's look at Shredder in more depth after the break....

Action Figure Review: The Rocketeer from ReAction by FunKo

While I wasn't born until the early/ mid 1980's, I really do have an affection for action figures that are designed in the vintage Kenner style. When I got into collecting Star Wars: The Power of the Force in 1995, I also started scouring antique shops and toy shows for the vintage Star Wars figures from Kenner. There's something about those toys that, despite how basic they are, makes them feel rather magical and special. FunKo, the makers of the popular POP! vinyls and the Game of Thrones Legacy action figures, announced earlier that their partnership with Super 7 would continue beyond the popular Alien series into other licensed properties. Today's figure review is the Rocketeer! Inspired by the 1991 film that was based on a character created in 1982 who was inspired by the adventure heroes of the 1930's and 1940's, the Rocketeer is an interesting choice for an action figure done in the style of action figures from the late 1970's. The packaging art and the Walt Disney legal info definitely tie this product as based on the Joe Johnston film, so this version of Cliff Secord is based on Billy Campbell's portrayal of the jet pack wearing hero. Ready for a look at this really cool throwback toy? Then join me after the break...

A 5-W Minifigure Review: Hot Pink AP Zombie Pheyden from OTMFG! by October Toys

Who?

Hot Pink AP Zombie Pheyden from OTMFG! by October Toys

What?

Now molded in hot pink plastic, this is the latest color variant of the original Zombie Pheyden figure that was one of the stretch goal/ bonus figures back when the OMFG! series 3 Kickstarter campaign was running.   Based on Pheyden, a space traveler from the Glyos System of toys, Zombie Pheyden is a creepy little minifigure that is based on a design by Matt Doughty/ L'amour Supreme and sculpted by George Gaspar. Pheyden is a neat little mini that should easily blend in with multiple minifigure collections. He's actually around 2 1/4 inches tall which makes him a little taller than your average minifigure from lines like OMFG, M.U.S.C.L.E., MWOTR, S.U.C.K.L.E., and Monster in My Pocket, but his design works as a taller, alien like creature. Remember that he is a solid PVC figure with no articulation. I'm not sure what the AP stands for, but the Hot Pink color is perfect for getting your minifigure fix when hanging out on the beach or something. The other three W's are after the break...

Check it Out: Julie Newmar as Catwoman Maquette from Tweeterhead

The Reel Brad Bell is usually the one showing you really expensive collectible items, but today I'm filling in for him. Check out this awesome Catwoman maquette from Tweeterhead. Based on Julie Newmar's portrayal of Batman's feline foe during the first two seasons of the 1966 Batman TV series, this maquette seems to do an excellent job of capturing the beauty, grace, and bad girl vibe of Ms. Newmar as the second greatest Catwoman of all time (sorry, I'm still a diehard fan of Michelle Pfeiffer's portrayal of Selina Kyle). She'll be released in August of 2014 and sells for $249.99. Check out Big Bad Toy Store and Entertainment Earth to order one for yourself. I think my wallet will jump off a building when places like Hot Toys, Sideshow, and Tweeterhead finally get around to releasing statues and figures of Yvonne Craig as Batgirl.

More pictures of this great maquette after the break....

Action Figure Review: "Bigfoot" from Imaginext Collectible Figures Series 2 by Fisher-Price

A few years ago I picked up a couple of the Batman Imaginext toys simply because I love Batman. Not many; I think I just grabbed a Batman, Mr. Freeze, and Two-Face. Two years ago when I learned that I was going to be a dad, I decided to start picking up a few more Batman Imaginext sets in the hope that I would have them  so I could play along with my future child. Well, little Adora isn't quite old enough to play with Imaginext yet (she's still getting the hang of Little People) but I've now gotten sucked into Imaginext based on their own merits thanks to a combination of three things: The MOTUC inspired vehicles, the Collectible Figures series, and Eric Stettmeier over at Toyriffic. Darn you all! Anyways, for those not familiar Imaginext are a toy series from Fisher-Price that are designed for the ages 3-8 crowd as pre-action figures. Of course, with the way kids are apparently leaving traditional toys in droves, these might be the only action figures we get. Fortunately, those of us who are parents and those of us who just recognize cool toys when we see them have gotten involved and have also began buying these things in droves. Honestly, Imaginext stuff is often more like the action figures many of us grew up with than most of the toys in the traditional action figure aisle. Last year Imaginext started doing the whole blind bagged thing that both Lego and Playmobil have already done with great success, and after seeing images of the third series of figures, I'm not hooked. Today I'm looking at one of the figures from series 2, a mysterious figure know only as "Bigfoot" to collectors. Why the mystery here? Find out after the break...

Check it Out: Phantom Troublemaker checks out LEGO KidsFest 2014 in Atlanta

I've been a fan of Needless Things for a year or so now and had the pleasure of running into Phantom Troublemaker at Charlotte Heroes Con just a few weeks ago (we took a few pictures together which I should be publishing soon). Phantom just posted some awesome pictures and coverage of the LEGO KidsFest in Atlanta, Georgia so whether you like LEGOs, giant models of Gandalf and Darth Vader, mosaics of the TMNT, or guys in purple and green luchador masks, you'll want to check this out:

Epic News: Tony Daniel re-launches Death Stroke for DC in October

I guess the news that Tony Daniel will reboot Deathstroke for DC come October 22nd is both good news and bad news.  The good news is that Tony Daniel is doing the art for the book, the bad: He is also writing it. Considering that the CW's Arrow is a hitSlade Wilson has never been more popular, so the timing of this relaunch makes sense.  However the choice of Tony Daniel to write is what I am not on board with.  If a well written Deathstroke book by a writer as talented as Kyle Higgins didn't sell, what makes them think an artist writing the book is going to be any different? If you recall, Detective Comics didn't really take off in the New 52 until Tony Daniel left and Chew scribe John Layman took over.  While I am sure this book's covers and interiors will look outstanding, this isn't the 90's DC! You can't sell a comic on art alone!

What do you guys think about comic artists making the transition to comic writers? Does it work or is the undertaking of art and writing just too much? Let us know in the comments!

Check it out: Hot Toys, Toy Fairs 2014 Exclusive Bank Robber Joker 2.0

Hot Toys has released images from one of their three Toy Fairs 2014 Exclusives: the 1/6 scale Bank Robber Joker 2.0 based on the late Heath Ledger's iconic portrayal of the character in Christopher Nolan's 2008 film The Dark Knight.  Find more images, a potential price, where to pre-order, and our thoughts after the break.....

Must Watch: Batman 66 Blu-ray Trailer

WB has finally released the first footage from the fully restored complete Batman 66 series blu-ray as well as confirmed a November release window.  Holy smokes, Epic Review readers! Based on the above footage the HD remaster looks beautiful!  If you were on the fence about picking this set up this holiday season you won't be after watching the above trailer.

So who is picking up this set come November? Doesn't it look beautiful for a 1960's show? Let us know in the comments!

Epic Photo: Henry Cavill as Superman from Batman V. Superman

Last week we got our first look at Henry Cavill as Clark Kent in Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice; well, now we have our first photo of Superman from the May 6th, 2016 film.  Personally, I like this dark, brooding pic of Superman where he looks like a fish out of water, perhaps in Gotham City.  My other thought, though, is it looks like Zack Snyder is once again taking the bright and hopeful character of Superman and Nolanizing him into the darker version we see above.  If this is the case the dichotomy that makes the Batman/Superman relationship interesting may be sorely lacking in the Snyder version of the Bruce/Clark story.

What do you readers think of the photo? Are you afraid Snyder will make the Superman character too dark once again? Let us know in the comments!

Check it out: Mondo does yet another Goonies poster

Mondo is doing yet another Goonies poster and as much as I love this film and the other posters Mondo has done for it, come on guys: Goonies again? Really?   The poster is 24x36 and is by Artist James Flames.  The variant is the Black & White version that will retail for $65 and is limited to 125.  The Regular is the color version to the right that will cost you $45 and be limited to 250.  These will go on sale at the Mondo Store at a Random time on July 3rd.  I mean, there's not much to really say here. This is about the laziest effort Mondo has ever had for a classic film and up there with their Captain America: Winter Soldier poster for the biggest flop of 2014.  I am sure these will sell out just like any Mondo poster, but you should have no problems finding these close to retail price on Ebay.

Must Watch: Horrible Bosses 2 Teaser Trailer

Warner Bros. and New Line have released the first trailer for Horrible Bosses 2 due out on November 26th.  The sequel features the return of all major cast member from the original and looks much bigger than the original, but probably not better.  I loved the original Horrible Bosses; in fact it was my favorite comedy of 2011, and it went a long way in cementing the three leads of Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, and Jason Bateman as A-list comedic stars.  My only concern here is with the premise. After all, won't the concept of murdering bosses become a bit repetitive after awhile?

So how excited are you readers for this sequel? Did the original even warrant a second installment or should some concepts not become franchises? Let us know in the comments!

Check it out: Hot Toys Toy Fair Exclusive 2014 AVP Ancient Predator

Hot Toys has released images from one of their three Toy Fair 2014 exclusives: The 1/6 scale Ancient Predator from AVP.    Find more images, a potential price, our thoughts, and where to pre-order after the break....

Check it out: Star Wars Black Walgreens Exclusive Prototype Boba Fett

Hasbro has revealed their Walgreens exclusive Boba Fett prototype that will retail for $20 due out this Summer.  Even though I backed out on the Star Wars Black line due to frustration over the line not being the definitive retail Star Wars line Hasbro claimed it would be, I have to admit this Fett is pretty epic.  Sideshow did a 1/6 version of this that was a hit at $180, so expect this one to be very hard to find and skyrocket in price on the aftermarket.  If you are lucky enough to go to SDCC you can pre-order this through Hasbro. If not, let the toy runs to Walgreens commence!

How do you guys feel about drug stores getting Star Wars figure exclusives.  Isn't that a bit odd? Let us know in the comments.

Epic Photo: Hot Toys Teases 2014 Toy Fair Exclusives

Well it's that time of year again where Hot Toys sales Toy Fair exclusives that are not really exclusives if you are willing to pay about $40 jack up in price at places like Side Show and BBTS.   Hot Toys released the above image to tease this years three 2014 Toy Fair exclusives, it looks like left to right you have Predator, Bank Robber Joker, and yet another Iron Man figure.  To be honest this is a bit underwhelming because earlier this year Hot Toys management hinted that one of this year's Toy Fair Exclusives would be a previously unreleased Villain from the Nolan Batman franchise that collectors hoped to be Liam Nesson's Ra's Al Ghul.  Rather than that, looks like we are getting our 100th Heath Ledger Joker, and even worst a re-do of a previous released version.  As for the Predator and Iron Man those are also a dime a dozen over at Hot Toys!

Epic News: The Finch's takeover Wonder Woman for DC

DC Comics has announced that the Husband and Wife combo of David and Meredith Finch will take over Wonder Woman starting with November's issue number 36.  David of course will provide the art with his wife providing the story.  I for one am pretty intrigued by this news, isn't it pretty cool to see a female write the most iconic female character in comics? And the fact that her husband is doing the art just adds a whole other unique wrinkle.  While I have loved Finch's art since his days at Marvel, this will be Meredith's first ongoing comic series as the Writer.

What do you fellow Epic Reviewers think about a Husband Wife team taking over for Wonder Woman?  How about the fact that a female is finally writing her?  Let us know in the comments!

Thanks to CBR for the scoop!

Epic News: Andy Serkis is in Avengers: Age of Ultron

I know what you may be thinking we know Andy Serkis is helping out Mark Ruffalo for Avengers: Age of Ultron with Hulk mo-cap work.  That's right, but now Serkis has confirmed that he actually stars in his own role in the film.  At this point Serkis is unwilling to divulge whether or not his role will be himself or a mo-cap character he will play.  If I had to speculate I would say Serkis will most likely being doing the Mo-cap work for Ultron with James Spader playing the voice.  Either way we will find out when Avengers: Age of Ultron hits theaters May 1st 2015!

So who do you guys think Serkis is Playing in Avengers 2? Who would you like to see him play? Let us know in the comments.

Check it out: Toys R' Us and Entertainment Earth SDCC Exclusive Power Rangers Legacy Lord Zedd

Toys R' Us and Entertainment Earth have announced that a Power Rangers Legacy Lord Zedd figure will be one of their SDCC 2014 exclusives.  Find more images, the price, and our thoughts after the break.....

Check it out: Transformers Age of Extinction Limited Edition Optimus and Grimlock Blu-ray Gift Set

Paramount has release the image for their Blu-ray gift gift set for Transformers Age of Extinction.  The set will include a 7.5 inch statue of Optimus Prime riding Grimlock as shown above and retail at a $120, but if you pre-order now you can get the set for $80 at Amazon.  At this time their is no word from Paramount on when the film will hit blu-ray, but expect it right around the holiday season. While the movie was a piece of crap, that Grimlock statue is almost enough to justify buying the cash grab that was Transformers 4.

What do you guys think of the set? Does anything justify adding this film to your collection? Let us know in the comments!

Epic News: Community moves to Yahoo for Season 6

Apparently we are not in the darkest timeline because the Dan Harmon geek masterpiece: Community will return to Yahoo for it's sixth and final season.  The sixth season will feature all of the remaining cast from last season, and last 13 episodes.  It's excited to know that Show Runner Dan Harmon will get a chance to go into a season of Community knowing it will be the last season and able to provide a fitting ending for the characters, unless that movie actually happens.  The only thing I am a bit skeptical is here is the Yahoo stream, after all they are a kind of new to the original programming game and I don't know how accessible their shows are.  My fear is without an app on phones and consoles will anybody sit down to watch Community?.  While I admittedly have been a bit of a Luddite when it comes to embracing 21st Century programming on outlets such as: Hulu and Netfilix, it's just frustrating that I have to subscribe and go to so many different places for my favorite shows especially when it has come to the point that I have to finish one of my all time favorite shows via a search engine.

What do you Readers think of Community wrapping up on Yahoo? Is anyone as skeptical about watching a show via Yahoo as I am? Let us know in the comments!
