Barbecue17's Top Ten Toylines of 2014

As has become a yearly tradition, it's time for me to share my top 10 favorite action figure lines of the past year. My 2012 and 2013 selections are here at ThEpic Review while my 2014 selections are over at my new blog, Action Figure Barbecue! 2014 was an odd year for action figures as distribution problems or a lack of releases hurt many lines that I've collected in the past. Still, there were some great toys to be had and I'm taking a closer look at them. Keep in mind a few things: First, these are my favorite lines. If I were doing a "best of 2014" I'd definitely be looking at the merits of lines that I don't even collect. Second, I do a separate top ten for individual figures from lines that I didn't mention here. Sometimes a single action figure release or a standout figure from a line I'm not overwhelmed by captures my attention: That's where my top 10 figures list comes in. Third, I list these alphabetically, not by merit. Ready to get started for my top 10 favorite lines of 2014? Then visit Action Figure Barbecue and let me know what you think!

Check it out: Sansa Stark is the new Jean Grey

In some geek casting news Sophie Turner aka Sansa Stark from HBO's Game of Thrones has been cast as the new younger version of Jean Grey that will appear in Bryan Singer's X-men Apocalypse out Memorial Day weekend 2016.  Sophie looks like Jean Grey, but whether or not she can actually pull off being the most powerful mutant in existence may be a more epic challenge.  Sophie is often criticized for being the dullest performer of all the Stark children on Game of Thrones and she will have big shoes to fill, as Famke Jansen made a pretty convincing Jean Grey over the past decade and a half.

What do you think as Sophie Turner as Jean Grey? Let us know in the comments!

Check it out: Batman to Appear in the Suicide Squad movie

Looks like Batman fans will get plenty of Batfleck for the rest of the decade, now not only is the Bat Bostonian scheduled to be in two Batman Vs Superman films, two Justice League films, and his own stand alone film in 2019 but now the Caped Crusader may be in WB's Suicide Squad film as well making it six film appearance with the span of 4 years .  What better way to burst the Superhero bubble than supersaturation of the World's most popular Superhero.  At this point when Suicide Squad releases on August 5th 2016 we may be head for suicide for the Superhero genre!

Is six Batman film appearances from 2016 through 2019 too much?

Check it out: New Batman Adventures Scarecrow Revealed

As much flack as DC Collectible has taken over it's BATS Line, you cannot deny how beautiful the  line has been as demonstrated by the line's latest Scarecrow figure.  I always loved this look for Scarecrow from the New Adventures.  Expect to see move this guys at Toyfair 2015 and for it to be released sometime in the second half of 2015!

Will any of you be picking this figure up? Or has quality control forced you to completely give up on this line? Let us know in the comments!

Check it out: Marvel Lando Calrissian comic on the way?

Their is an Epic Rumor that the next Star Wars comic Marvel might be doing after: Star Wars, Darth Vader, Princess Leia, and Kannan the last Padawan may be a Lando Calrissian comic written by famous Marvel scribe Johnathan Hickman.  While I love Lando a plan for a comic like this begins to go against the tightness of the line Marvel recently promised, and Hickman just doesn't seem like the best choice to write Lando if they go this route.  Hickman is known for big overarching brainy stories, and a comic featuring the likeness of the one and only Billy Dee would be better suited for a more adventurous and fun writer like Mark Millar per say?

What do you guys think of a potential Lando Comic? How many new Star Wars comics are too much? Let us know in the comments!

Check it out: Just how did Howard the Duck get Collected?

Ever wonder how Howard the Duck ended up collected at the end of a certain Marvel Studios film last Summer.  Well this April in Chip Zdarsky's and Joe Quinone's Howard the Duck #2 you can find out.  While I love the idea of the Guardian's making Howard the Duck relevant, I am a person who likes his comics separate from his films.  Hopefully this will be revealed in an extra, and not the focus of the entire issue.  Because if we are beginning to dabble in an era where Marvel Comics becomes intertwined with main stream Marvel 616 comics, look out! Can you imagine how convoluted that could be? Let the comics breathe Marvel and be the intimate portrait of these characters they were before the Superhero bubble, and what they hopefully will be when that bubble bursts, they do not need to be symbiotic.

How do you guys feel about comics crossing over with films? Is this a good move? Let us know in the comments?

Check it out: Howard the Duck Run the Jewel's Cover

This April the second issue of Marvel's Howard the Duck will feature a run the Jewels parody cover featuring Howard and the one and only Rocket Raccoon mimicking hip hops biggest duo of last year.  Howard the Duck is shaping up to be one of those books that at first I had 0 interest in, but now am anxious to checkout.  The first issue that features Howard as some type of dimensional Detective by Chip Zdarsky and Joe Quinones hits in March, and you can snag this epic variant in April.

Does anyone here plan on reading Howard the Duck? What are your thoughts on the character in general? let us know in the comment!

Check it out: Exclusive Star Wars #1 Cover through Loot Crate. (Also, I've just subscribed to Loot Crate)

Hey everyone! It's your old friend Barbecue17 here!

If you know me, you know that I love getting goofy stuff in the mail, so I just signed up for Loot Crate. Heard of it? It's a subscription service that costs between $12 and $14 dollars a month which involves you getting a crate of bizarre nerdy stuff. They guarantee you'll get at least $40 dollars worth of stuff and honestly I believe that. Look at some of the cool stuff they gave out a month or two ago for a Galactic themed crate. There's a Funko ReAction figure and a Funko mystery mini. That's about 17-18 dollars worth of stuff right there. It's different every month but you get the idea. Anyways, if you subscribe by Monday evening you can get an exclusive cover of Marvel's Star Wars #1 in the next crate. That's already worth 3 or 4 bucks at least. Anyways, you can subscribe a month at a time, three months at a time or six months at a time. I did the three month plan to see what I think (and get the exclusive Star Wars comic cover). If you're interested, check it out: Loot Crate. Also, use STARWARS as a discount code and you'll save three dollars. Wizard!

Marveling at Spiderman

Spiderman is arguably the most recognizable Superhero in American history behind only Batman and Superman making him the biggest star of the Marvel Catalog.  However in a World in which the Avengers and the  Guardians of the Galaxy dominate the cultural landscape the Web-Head's name is often forgotten after a couple of mediocre Marc Webb films.  Just last night I asked 5 random people if they knew who Peter Parker was and only one could answer, sadly Spidey is stating to dwindle from the pop-culture landscape not only a year after a new film.  In the past several months it is a well known fact that a discussion has been taking place over the film rights for Spidey between Disney and Sony.  Talks have took place about co-distribution of the character, a complete sell, or even the return of Sam Rami and Tobey Maguire to the franchise, whatever happens wether or not Peter Parker will return home is still very much up in the air. While many see the return of the Web Slinger to Marvel Studios as a no brainer, it's only fair to look at both the pros and cons of a Spidey coming home.  We will do this after the break….

Tom Hardy OUT Jake Gyllenhall possibly in for Warner Bros Suicide Squad

Tom Hardy has now dropped out of WB's Suicide Squad.  Hardy who was set to play original Squad member Rick Flag is rumored to be replaced by Jake Gyllenhall who would join the already all-star cast of Jared Leto (Joker), Will Smith (Dead Shot), Viola Davis (Amanda Waller) among others.  The bigger question is here is what do these casting news and rumors say about the direction of DC Superhero films moving forward? Because A. This script is so good the best actors in Hollywood cannot turn it down or B. WB just wants to throw stars in our face to make us care about a lesser known DC franchise.  I would guess B!  Just because we know the actors faces doesn't mean we will love the movie, just see your own TV show's WB,  no one knew who Stephen Amell or Grant Gustin  were but we love the Arrow and Flash.   However in a World were Superhero love is the norm and not the exception, hopefully WB will focus just as much on the essence of these characters as they do who are playing them.

What do you think of how WB is approaching Superhero casting so far? Are you excited for Suicide Sqaud? Let us know in the comments!

Comic Book Review: Ant-Man #1 Written by: Nick Spencer, Art by: Mark Brooks

No doubt in order to prepare for the release of the new Marvel Studio's Ant-Man film this July Marvel has relaunched the comic of a character with an Ant-Sized fan base in order to build up a modern following for the character.  Personally I have always been a fan of Ant-Man, even though he can be an abusive jerk at times he is one of the founding member of the Avengers and the man who originally created Ultron.  However all of that was Hank Pym the new Ant-Man series by Nick Spencer and Mark Brooks focuses on career criminal Scott Lang.  Find out our thoughts after the break……

Check it Out: Archie Vs Predator Comic announced for April

Dark Horse has just announced what is sure to be one of the most insane but epic comic book story lines of 2015: Archie Vs. Predator.  The 4 issue story line written by Alexi De Campi with Art by Fernando Ruiz is set to start April 15th.  Apparently Archie, Jughead, and the gang will run into more trouble than they can handle on Spring Break 2015.  While I have never read Archie, I hear very good things with what Dark Horse is doing with this property just last year they released the critically acclaimed Afterlife with Archie which focused on a Zombie outbreak in Riverdale.  While I hope to catch up with the trade for Afterlife with Archie soon I am extremely excited to jump start my Spring Fever and foray into the Archie-verse with this book.

Will anyone else be picking up the new AVP?

Check it out: Mondo Foxcather Poster

Reg: 24 by 36, Edition Size of 175, $45

Variant: 24 x 36, Edition Size of 75, $65

Mondo has announced plans for a new poster for artist Jay Shaw to celebrate the critically acclaimed best picture contender Fox Catcher directed by Bennett Miller.  While most people only know Fox Catcher only as the film were Steve Carell plays a non-comedic character, look for it to continue to make some serious noise on the awards circuit.  Fox Catcher revolves around an obsessive Father (Carell's attempt) to train his sons (Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo) for Olympic Wrestling when a unexpected crime ensues.  You have to love how Mondo focuses on none of that as Shaw simply focuses on a Fox literally catching himself.  The posters go on sale at a random time today at the Mondo Store!

Has anyone seen Fox Catcher or have any interest in it after it won 3 Golden Globes? My Wife and I plan to catch it this weekend so I will let you know my thoughts sometimes next week let us know yours in the comments!

Check it out: Mondo the Raid Vinyl

As Mondo continues their push for vinyl they have announced that they are releasing one of the most bombastic film soundtracks in recent memory in The Raid.  The Vinyl Jacket features artwork from Chris Weston.  The album is up for order now at the Mondo Store for $35.  I love the move Mondo is making to release as many LP's as they do posters.  This gives the collector a cheaper way to own Mondo Artwork without breaking the bank with the added bonus of music, also records are much easier and cheaper to frame than large posters.  If you haven't joined the hipster trend of picking up a record player give it a shot in 2015.  I bought my wife one for her birthday last year and we haven't regretted it one bit, it truly is the most decompressed way to enjoy audio, and what better way to start your vinyl collection than with Mike Shinoda and Indonesian Rock. Once you go vinyl you will never go back!

What about you readers do any of you own and actually listen to a record player on a regular basis? If so do you own any movie soundtracks? Share your thoughts on the resurgence of vinyl in the comment!

Check it out: Community Season 6 premiere Date Announced

Fans of Greendale Community college can breathe s sigh of relief, the cast of the cult comedy instant  classic that is Dan Harmon's Community took to the inter-webs yesterday to announce the debut date for their Yahoo exclusive 6th season.  This of course after NBC idiotically cancelled one their only decent comedies, which made even less sense as last night was the start of the last season of Parks and Rec.  Now we just have to wait for that movie! #6seasonandamovie,  checkout the video for the date!

So how stoked are you for the 6th season of Community? Does the fact that it will be on yahoo and not NBC affect if you will watch Jeff and the gang or not? Let us know in the comments!

Check it out: House of Cards Season 3 Trailer

Frank Underwood returns to Netflix February 27th for the 3rd season of the critically acclaimed NETFLIX series: House of Cards and we have the first trailer above.  Season 3 looks like even higher stakes and if you can imagine even sicker twist for the show.

Check it out: Avengers Age of Ultron Trailer 2

The best part of last nights College Football National Championship in which Ohio State Beat Oregon was the new Avengers Age of Ultron Trailer.  The trailer focuses much more on the action than the original trailer, but to me that's not the most intriguing aspect of it.  In the Avengers sequel Director Joss Whedon has looks to have evolved this franchise from superhero popcorn fun to an eerie and ominous sci-fi film with James Spader's Ultron taking center stage and the heroes in actual danger.

We will have to wait to May 1st to see if Avengers 2 is really something different than the original!

An EPIC Return

In the past year I the Reel Brad Bell the founder of The Epic Review have got Married, moved, bought my first home, and started a new job.  As a result my passion project the epic review has suffered a bit.  Many of you know Barbecue17 our great toy writer has started a sister blog: (Action Figure Barbecue) to this site in order to house the toy reviews you guys love, btw I chose this wedding pic because you can see Barbecue17 in the background who was the minister who performed my wedding.  In 2015 my goal is the get this blog back to the labor of love it was originally intended to be.  As a reuslt you will see very little ads or attempts to make this blog a news site.  Instead it will be a place were I can focus on loving the things I love whether that be Film, TV, Comics, or Collecting.  This will be done by a few a posts a week as well as hopefully a monthly podcast starting back up in February 2015 done by Barbecue17 and I and Andrew Stokes from time to time.
